I’ve seen “The $5 Savings Plan” online before, which is where you put aside every $5 bill you get back. That’s a little rough for me since 1) I function with an ATM card and 2) My bi-weekly allotment is only $250. So I decided that I’d start using cash, and then take the change and any $1 bills that I have when I get home and put them into a jar. I’ve cheated a little here and there in the last 10 days, but nothing extreme. I’ve used just under $5 of the “Keep the Change” money. Twice for purchases – one where the cashier asked if I had a penny, and once where I didn’t not have anymore bills on me and the total was $11.xx. I also used $2.50 to go towards hot lunch next week for my girls ($7.50 total) as they were begging to have the special Thanksgiving meal on Friday. I also made a purchase on my debit card a little bit ago that came in at about $10 because I didn’t want to go to the bank to get out a $20.
Using cash has helped me spend WAY less. I’ve put $23.97 into my Keep the Change jar, and still have $30 in my bank account from my $250 payday allotment. Payday is in 5 days. Normally by this point I’m tapped out and in danger of running out of gas and milk, but right now I have more than enough of both to make it 5 days.
I think on payday I will take what was left in my bank account and add that to my Keep the Change jar. I’ll keep you updated for sure. 🙂
